Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is The Respite Inn?
The Respite Inn is a unique bed and breakfast inn offering out of home respite care to adults with developmental disabilities. Nestled in a beautiful country setting surrounded by redwood and sycamore trees, every room welcomes guests with its own unique design. The outdoor space is a haven for anyone who enjoys the calming tranquility of nature.
The Respite Inn awaits visitors with staff who are specially trained to accommodate the individual needs of each guest. Knowing that their family member is receiving the best level of care, parents and family can truly take a break from caregiving and have some time for their own needs.
Why The Respite Inn for your child or relative?
Research shows that regular respite for family caregivers reduces stress and illness, helping them sustain in-home support for their child or relative over a longer period of time overall. Besides a break from caregiving duties, respite allows families to address important self-care needs ranging from renewed interpersonal connections to taking a short vacation, to (finally) handling their own needs for important medical appointments, car and home issues, and other personal business.
At the same time, the child or relative under their care is also enjoying new and special experiences. He or she is making new friends, trying new activities, and reveling in a new level of independence. In-home routines (medications, etc.) are supported, and The Respite Inn’s outstanding food preparation makes communal mealtimes a joy.
Who can stay at the Respite Inn?
The Respite Inn is licensed as a non-medical facility under California Community Care Licensing (facility #071440695) to provide overnight accommodations for persons 18 to 59 years old who have a developmental disability and qualify for the State Regional Center services. The Respite Inn is fully accessible and equipped to serve the needs of your child or relative with mobility limitations.

How long can a guest stay at The Respite Inn?
When we arrange a guest’s length of stay, our goal is to provide their family/caregivers with respite from a few days to a few weeks. Our minimum stay is 3 days and our maximum is 21 days, but there are several factors that affect our ability to accommodate the stay you desire for your adult with developmental disabilities. One of the most important is maintaining our staff-to-guest ratio for your preferred dates. Other factors include the availability of a bed in a gender-appropriate room, or having specially-trained staff for a guest with unique care needs. A conversation with you about the needs of your adult child/family member, and your desired timing and length of stay, will help us to quickly identify dates when The Respite Inn can support your family.
What ratio need can The Respite Inn accommodate?
Guests needs must be able to be met within a 1:3 (staff/guest) ratio at the most. This is a regulatory requirement, and our 35 years of experience have shown us that it is a prudent ratio for giving our guests the level of service, attention, and safety that we all want for your child/family member.
Can The Respite Inn accommodate my child/family member’s mobility restrictions?
The Respite Inn will talk with you about the mobility needs of your child/family member The Respite Inn is 100% wheelchair accessible, but we may also need to plan for added mobility support from our staff if available.
